Best way to connect Samsung TV to Sony AV Receiver

I am very new to forums so please forgive any slips in etiquette!

I currently have a Samsung UE40D5003 TV and am looking to obtain a Sony STR-DN1030 AV receiver. This might seem like a simple question but what is the best way to connect the TV to the amp? The outputs on the back of the TV (which is fixed to the wall, making looking at the rear rather difficult!) seem to be somewhat limited, comprising 2 x HDMI sockets and a SCART socket.

I also have a PS3 that I think will connect via HDMI to the amp.

Will I need a SCART to phono cable to send the TV audio to the amp? Or will the HDMI connection take care of this?

Also, I currently have a Sony DAV-DZ230 DVD Home Theatre System which connects to my TV via SCART and HDMI. I understand that the SCART connection is for the audio. However, the audio is always TV, even when I am watching my PS3. Will this be a problem when I upgrade to the Sony STR-DN1030 AV receiver? Is there a way to change the audio output on my TV?

If you have taken the time to read this far, thank you very much!

Hi and welcome to the forum.
The AVR needs just one connection, an HDMI cable, to the TV.
All the other devices connect to the AVR by whatever is the best connection they have.
The order of preference is HDMI, component, Scart, S-Video, composite.
If both TV and AVR do ARC the audio from the TV's tuner will go the AVR back down the HDMI cable.
If they don't have ARC you will need for that an optical cable from TV Out to AVR In.
Look in the manuals to check whether they have it and if so how to specify it.
Why the HTS needs two connections now isn't clear, but if you still need it, just for playing DVDs, it will need only one to the AVR.
HTH but feel free to ask for more details.

Many thanks for the reply and the kind greeting.

I don't think my TV has a TV out socket on it. I gather that some Samsung TVs have an optical out but I'm fairly sure mine doesn't (though without removing the TV from the wall to take a look, I can't be certain). In fact, I've had a bit of a google but can't find a decent diagram or picture of the reverse of my TV anywhere.

With regard to my current HTS, I gather that the SCART connection is for audio only and the HDMI is for images. I am planning to get rid of this item as soon as I have my new amp.

Any further help will be much appreciated.

Retain the SCART cable between the TV and the AVR to get analogue stereo audio Out of the TV into the AVR.

Connect your Sources to the AVR via HDMI or HDMI + Digital Audio - HDMI on its own for Sources which allow you to send Video + 5.1 via HDMI whilst some Sources (SKY+ HD*) may require you to use HDMI + Optical or Coaxial for 5.1.

List all of your sources and folk can better advise.

*Some SKY+ HD box can now deliver 5.1 via HDMI.

When I get the new amp, I'll only have my PS3 to connect. Is this best to connect with HDMI & an optical cable, or just the HDMI cable on its own?

Assuming you aren’t expecting to use the TV speakers all you require is an HDMI cable (PS3 > AVR) and set the PS3 to 5.1 LPCM via HDMI.

Mine from several years ago has and it's surprising that any others don't.
The manual for yours very oddly doesn't include a diagram or any detail of the connections.
It seems that you'll only find out for sure by taking it down and looking around the back or sides!
There might be a reference in the manual to HDMI ARC though, so do take a good look for that.
I still don't get that about Scart for audio and HDMI for video but if you're not keeping the device it won't matter.
On J F's comment "Some SKY+ HD box can now deliver 5.1 via HDMI" - all the current ones either do it or can be forced to receive the facility to do it - see the Satellite forum for details either way.
So, all your devices should connect to the AVR by HDMI only, and the hierarchy of other connections won't apply.
